TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Legacy Lead of ASEAN QR Code Pandu Patria Sjahrir attended the second day of the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit 2023. He pushed for Indonesia's QRIS payment cooperation with ASEAN members.
"This measure represents a significant leap in our commitment to ASEAN economic integration cooperation," he said at Sultan Hotel on Monday, September 4, 2023.
According to Pandu, interstate implementation of QRIS is a foundation for a prosperous Asia. He also believes this payment system cooperation will boost the economic growth in ASEAN countries.
Currently, QRIS payment cooperation has been implemented in six ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore. The central banks in these countries have integrated for a faster, cheaper, transparent, and inclusive interstate payment system.
QRIS's cooperation with Thailand was released on August 17, 2023. Bank Indonesia and Bank of Thailand fully implemented the interstate QRIS payment system on August 29, 2022. This year, Indonesia launched its QRIS cooperation with Malaysia on May 8, 2023, and Singapore with its pilot project on August 17, 2023.
The implementation of the QRIS interstate payment system targets MSMEs and the tourism sector. Through this program, interstate transactions could skip currency converters and simply scan the QR code to proceed with payments.
Therefore, foreign tourists in Indonesia could scan the QRIS used by Indonesian merchants through their own country's payment application. In turn, Indonesian tourists abroad could scan the country's standardized QR payment using Indonesia's payment application using QRIS.
