Communication Minister Plans to Sanction Agencies Over Data Breach

22 August 2023 11:58 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi is planning to implement sanctions on agencies that experience a data breach. According to Budi, the ministry will fine agencies that have their data breached.

"Valuable commodities nowadays are not only water, air, fuel, and oil, but also data," said Budi Arie when met in the ministry building on Monday, August 21, 2023.

In addition to the fine, the data managers are liable for penal sanctions. "If a crime is involved, it will be processed. But [the ministry] is not a law enforcer," he said.

Previously, in relation to data protection, the ministry is targeting the implementing rules of the Data Protection Law to be finalized in September.

"We are drafting a governmental regulation and a presidential regulation," said Director General of Public Information and Communication of the ministry, Usman Kansong, when called on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

However, Usman Kamsong refrained from detailing the provision which will be included in the regulations. "Hopefully, it will be finalized in September," he remarked.
