TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yuliansyah, head of the Jakarta Police's unit for crimes against teenagers, children, and women, said the police received a report from the Miss Universe Indonesia finalists about allegations of sexual harassment. The police, he said, would follow up by asking for information from the reporter.
"We want to coordinate this with the lawyer of the people who filed the complaint; to ask when they can come to the police station," Yuliansyah told reporters on Tuesday, August 8.
He said that the police will prepare the administrative documents needed to launch an investigation. But there is no schedule to take statements from the reporters yet. "One thing for sure is that we will first call in the victims," he said.
Miss Universe Indonesia finalists reported allegations of sexual harassment during body checks by members of the pageant's committee.
The organizer of Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 was reported to the police for allegedly violating Articles 4, 5, 6, 14 and 15 of Law No.12/2022 on Crimes of Sexual Violence.
The incident allegedly took place on August 1, 2023. Mellisa Anggraini, the victims' attorney, said that the contestants did not know there would be a body checking session, which was having their pictures taken with no clothes on.
"Suddenly a body check was carried out on the contestants outside the official agenda," he said after reporting to the Jakarta Metro Police on Monday, August 7.
Mellisa considered the committee's actions is an assault to women's integrity. The body checking was not conducted in a private area. In fact, there were men who allegedly touched the Miss Universe Indonesia finalists' body parts.
