TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi voiced optimism that ASEAN can become the epicenter of growth amid various global challenges and lingering conflict in Myanmar, one of its member countries.
“We must realize that the situation (the conflict) can be resolved if there is political will throughout Myanmar, and ASEAN as a giant ship must move forward. This ship must sail forward and shall not sink because it is responsible for hundreds of millions of people living in the region. The epicenter of growth. Happy birthday to ASEAN,” Jokowi said while attending the 56th ASEAN Day anniversary on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at the ASEAN Secretariat in South Jakarta.
In his remarks, he stressed that current global challenges are not easy. The global economy has not fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rivalry is intensifying. However, he believes that ASEAN is capable of achieving its goals as long as it is united.
“ASEAN is an example of diversity, harmony, complementarity, and mutual reinforcement. Differences exist but they are not obstacles for us to realize ASEAN's determination and goals,” he said.
The President also said that ASEAN has powerful assets to become the epicenter of growth. These are economic growth, demographic bonus, and trust, which could fuel a revival momentum.
Jokowi went on to say that ASEAN must also be the future of the world, and an anchor of peace and stability. “Next month the 43rd ASEAN Summit will be held. As a chair, Indonesia wants to lay a strong foundation for ASEAN to face challenges and respond to dynamics and plays a pivotal role,” he said.
