TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has finally spoken up about the death of the Bengal tiger belonging to famous YouTuber Alshad Ahmad. Alshad announced on his Instagram on Monday, July 24, that his pet tiger cub named Cenora died.
“Yes [an investigation will be launched], there will be a thorough evaluation,” the KLHK Ministry’s Director General of Conservation and Ecosystem Resources, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, told Tempo on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.
Satyawan said he would deploy a team to evaluate animal welfare and seek the cause of the death of the Bengal tiger. “After an evaluation, we will determine the next step,” he said.
Satyawan said the Bengal tiger is an imported animal from abroad, so it is not listed as a protected animal in Indonesia. “ What's protected is our tiger, the Sumatran tiger,” he added.
Alshad uploaded his photo with Cenora on Monday, expressing gloom over the death of his pet tiger cub. The post has gained 250,995 likes and 31,145 comments, sparking a controversy.
Some offered condolences, while some questioned the legality of possessing and even breeding Bengal tigers in the country. One of the biggest wild cats alive is listed as endangered in Nepal, India, and Bhutan.
In one of the comments, the YouTouber claimed his seven of his tiger cubs had died. All of them were bred by one female tiger.
This case has gone viral on social media platforms, raising concern among netizens over animal protection and welfare. The keyword ‘Alshad Ahmad’ has become the most discussed topic on Twitter with around 37,900 tweets.
