TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Light rail transit or LRT Jabodebek will operate automatically without a driver and only be monitored by a certified train attendant who is tasked to ensure that the train runs well. The LRT Public Relations Manager Kuswardojo ensured that driverless trains will be safer than human-driven ones.
“More than 60 percent of accidents occur due to human factors, such as fatigue and others,” he said at the LRT Depot in Bekasi, West Java, Thursday, July 6, 2023.
He explained that a layered security system and travel system had been installed on the train. “When it goes more than 80 kilometers per hour, the system will pull the brake,” Kuswardojo said.
That is the same with the travel acceleration system. The distance between one train to another will remain the same. If something unexpected happens, such as there is an object on the train track, it will automatically be detected and the train will stop before hitting the object.
“Likewise, when an earthquake occurs, the train will stop automatically. The train will run again when conditions are favorable. Inshallah, it will be much safer,” Kuswardojo said.
Last year, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo rode the LRT Jabodebek on the trial run from Harjamukti Station in Depok to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) Station in East Jakarta.
“It’s a 9-kilometer route and takes 12 minutes at a train speed of 80 kilometers per hour, very fast and without a driver,” he said at the TMII LRT Station, East Jakarta.
Apart from having advanced technology, Jokowi was proud that LRT Jabodebek trains were domestically produced by PT Industri Kereta Api (INKA).
