Tax DG Forms Task Force to Oversee Crazy Rich Indonesians' Tax Report

4 July 2023 10:43 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaDirector General of Tax at the Finance Ministry, Suryo Utomo, announced the establishment of a task force that functions to supervise group taxpayers and high-net-worth individuals (HWI) alias crazy rich Indonesians.

“We have formed a task force to oversee group taxpayers and HWI who are usually part of the group taxpayers,” Suryo said in a press conference on the State Budget in June 2023 as broadcast on the Finance Ministry's YouTube, quoted on Monday, July 3, 2023.

Tax observer from the Center for Indonesia Taxation Analysis (CITA) Fajry Akbar opined that the task force is necessary so that the tax head office can easily supervise taxpayers in the group category.

“The task force is really needed,” Fajry said to Tempo on Monday, July 3, 2023. “Of course, with better central supervision, we hope that the risk of abuse of authority will subside.”

According to him, rich people are also professionals who can manage their tax obligations and have access to overseas asset ownership. Thus, there are risks of tax planning and asset hiding to avoid higher taxes.

Fajry cited the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) data in 2018 that there were Rp670 trillion in financial assets abroad that had not been reported. Not to mention non-financial assets such as property, high-value art, or luxury jewelry.

“Some were reported through the voluntary disclosure program (PPS), but some have not. This shows the compliance risk of taxpayers,” said Fajry, supporting the presence of the tax task force for crazy rich Indonesians.
