TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo revealed five stadiums in the country that have met Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) standards are being considered to be a venue for the 2023 U-17 World Cup. Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) falls short of the standards.
“At present, stadiums that meet FIFA standards are Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK), Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium (GBT), Manahan Stadium, Jakabaring Stadium, and I Wayan Dipta Stadium,” Dito outlined after attending the 2023 LPS Monas Half Marathon at the Istora Stadium, Jakarta, Sunday, July 2, 2023.
FIFA appointed Indonesia as the host of the U-17 World Cup which will be held from November 10 to December 2, 2023. This international football match may not be held at the GBK due to the clashing schedule with the Coldplay concert on November 15, 2023.
President Joko Jokowi Widodo thus asked cabinet ministers to find an alternative stadium and mentioned JIS in North Jakarta.
Dito clarified that there are still issues in JIS. The Indonesian government is also waiting for FIFA's decision regarding the exact venue for this year’s U-17 tournament.
“JIS Stadium is among the option, but there are still some notes, though it also meets (FIFA) standards,” he said.
According to him, the government in tandem with the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is preparing stadiums that have the potential to become venues for the U-17 World Cup.
The government is focusing on renovating 22 stadiums to support the development of Indonesian sports in the future. Minister Dito Ariotedjo confirmed that the government is not only reviewing JIS but also several other potential stadiums.
