TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In Indonesia, Eid al-Adha is often celebrated by having Qurbani meat barbecues with families, friends, or neighbors as the day is marked with the sacrifice of livestock, including goats, sheep, and cows.
Although red meat is a good source of protein, consuming it excessively may raise low-density lipoproteins (LDL), or bad cholesterol levels, which may cause stroke and heart attack.
One of the ways to prevent high cholesterol levels is by eating a lot of vegetables. As reported by healthshots.com, here are five foods that are best paired with red meat:
1. Broccoli
Broccoli is rich in soluble fiber to reduce bad cholesterol. In the digestive tract, broccoli will bind to bile acids and make it easier for the body to remove cholesterol.
2. Water Spinach
Water spinach contains potassium, fiber, folate, and calcium which are good for heart health. Nutrients in potassium can reduce LDL levels and minimize the occurrence of heart disease. Its xanthophyll and lutein can also lower cholesterol levels by preventing it from accumulating in the bloodstream.
3. Cauliflower
Cauliflower contains a type of lipid that can stop the intestines from absorbing cholesterol. It is also rich in sulforaphane which keeps the arteries clear of fatty deposits caused by high cholesterol.
4. Radish
Radish is a good source of anthocyanins to lower LDL levels and prevent inflammation in the blood vessels and arteries. It is also rich in calcium and potassium as well as antioxidants which are good for minimizing the risk of heart disease.
5. Carrots
Carrots provide many benefits to the heart. Consuming carrots can change cholesterol absorption and bile acids excretion and increases antioxidant status which can ultimately protect the heart. Carrots are also a source of fiber, namely pectin, that can lower cholesterol in the blood as it prevents the digestive tract from absorbing bad cholesterol.
