TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival of sacrifice where Muslims slaughter livestock, including sheep, goats, and cows, and then distribute them to the community. Nutritionist and lecturer at Airlangga University (Unair), Lailatul Muniroh, highlights the importance of food diversification during the holidays.
She explains that meat consumption must be according to personal nutritional requirements and a balanced healthy diet. “Each individual has different nutritional needs based on age, gender, activity level, and health condition,” Muniroh says.
The portion of sacrificial meat for daily consumption must also comply with the guidelines for the intake of protein and other nutrients.
Consuming red meat, she underlines, should be balanced with vegetable protein sources, such as nuts, seeds, or soy products including tofu and tempeh. It is also highly advisable to balance it with low-fat food at other times.
Avoiding excessive consumption of meat is vital to maintain a balanced diet. Thus, she opines that a diverse diet will help ensure a balanced nutritional intake.
“Apart from the sacrificial meat, make sure to eat a variety of other foods including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and other foods that are rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals,” Muniroh reiterates as quoted from Unair’s website.
Not only being wise in consuming but people are also appealed to be wise when processing raw meat. Make sure that the meat is handled properly according to hygiene standards, especially during Eid al-Adha. Cleanliness during the slaughtering process, storage, and cooking must be maintained to prevent bacterial or pathogenic contamination.
