Japan's Emperor Naruhito Tours Borobudur Temple Amid Indonesia Visit

22 June 2023 13:23 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japanese Emperor Naruhito on Thursday paid a visit to the Borobudur Temple as part of a series of state agendas during his Indonesian visit in an official invitation from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. His arrival at the temple also serves a nostalgic purpose which relives his late father Emperor Akihito’s visit to the temple back in 1991.

Tempo observed the Emperor had arrived at the temple earlier this morning at 08:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) and was immediately welcomed by Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo and his entourage.

Indonesian officials present at the event were Central Java Police Chief Inspector General Rycko Amelza Dahniel, and Military Commander IV Diponegoro Maj. Gen. TNI Widi Prasetijono, Main Director of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko Febrina Intan and Head of Borobudur, Mendut and Pawon UPT Museum and Cultural Heritage Wiwit Kasiyati.

Naruhito was given a tour by Mura Aristina as the guide and roamed Borobudur’s third-story hall and was given a brief history of the region’s largest Buddhist temple through the story of the Lalitavistara relief carved on the wall.

The Japanese Emperor’s visit lasted roughly 40 minutes.

President Director of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko (TWC) Febrina Intan said the visit of Emperor Naruhito is hoped to elevate the bilateral relations between Indonesia and Japan. "This is a very good moment for Indonesia, especially Central Java tourism with the main magnet of Borobudur Temple," said Intan.
