TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japanese Emperor Hironomiya Naruhito arrived in Yogyakarta on Wednesday 21 June, as part of his visit to Indonesia. Among the places he visited was the Sabo Dam Engineering Hall in Maguwoharjo, Sleman, Yogyakarta.

Built in 1958, Balai Sabo Dam is part of the pioneering collaboration between Indonesia and Japan developing sabo systems as a structure that works to control a large amount of lava and sediment outflows from volcanoes. Indonesia's Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono accompanied the Emperor in visiting the Sabo Dam.

Basuki said that Sabo Infrastructures in Indonesia exist thanks to the collaboration between Indonesia and Japan since 1958, beginning with the Sabo Vertical Training Center project located at the Sabo Technical Center Maguwoharjo Sleman.

Naruhito, said Basuki, was very pleased to see that the Sabo Technical Center in Sleman was still well-maintained with its laboratories still functioning.

"The emperor's visit was also to discuss cooperation on the development of sabo with Japan which previously ended in 2021. It will be continued," Basuki said.

Basuki said the sabo infrastructure is important to control lava or debris flows caused by heavy rains. This is true for both Japan and Indonesia, two countries that share the same characteristic of having hundreds of volcanoes. "Japan has 111 volcanoes, we have 129," Basuki said.

To date, Basuki said, the government has built at least 277 sabo works on the slopes of Mount Merapi to control lava. Meanwhile, from the existing master plan, Mount Merapi, which is still actively erupting, needs at least 367 sabo dams or around 90 more.

Japan's Reiwa Emperor Naruhito is on a visit to Indonesia with Empress Masako. They arrived on June 17. This is the Emperor's first visit since he acceded to the Chrysanthemum Throne in 2019, becoming the 126th Emperor of Japan.
