TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said President Joko Widodo or Jokowi asked Tesla CEO Elon Musk to build an electric vehicle battery plant in the country. The offer was conveyed during the president's meeting with the tech tycoon at the 2024 World Water Forum (WWF) in Bali.
“We made an offer, [on whether] it is possible to build an EV battery plant here, precursor cathode. And he will consider it,” Luhut said as reported by Reuters today, May 22.
The Indonesian government has been trying to woo Tesla to build an EV-related factory for years as the country looks to develop its EV sector by tapping into domestic nickel resources.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Indonesia was the world's largest producer of nickel in 2022, with a total production of 3.3 million metric tons (MT). This was an increase of 20.88 percent from the previous year's 2.73 million metric tons.
Indonesia contributed 1.6 million metric tons or about 48.48 percent of global production. Last year, Indonesia’s nickel reserves were the largest at 21 million metric tons, ahead of Australia's 19 million metric tons.
Citing from mining-technology.com, GlobalData recorded that Indonesia experienced a 13-percent hike in nickel production in 2021. A further four percent increase is forecast for 2022 to 2026.
