TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo highlighted the low budget for the poverty alleviation programs while the rate of impoverishment in the country remains high.
“We know that a lot of people live in poverty. This should be prioritized,” he said in a speech at the National Meeting of the Finance and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP) in East Jakarta, Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
The state head demanded close monitoring of this issue and asked BPKP to identify the root problem and provide recommendations to related parties. The agency is also encouraged to accompany and oversee the budget allocation.
“So our budget is truly for productive [programs]. Once again, we are competing with other countries,” he said.
He asserted that the state budget (APBN) and regional budget (APBD) must be spent as well as possible. BPKP must exert optimal work as a supervisory agency and is capable of monitoring provincial, district, and city governments.
“BPKP must be able to guard, supervise, and direct. The central, provincial, district, and city governments respect BPKP. Use this for the good of the country,” Jokowi remarked, regarding the low budget for the poverty alleviation programs.
