Jokowi to Bring Up Issues on Myanmar in G7 Summit in Japan

19 May 2023 13:23 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo planned to bring a number of issues discussed at the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo to the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, which will be attended by developed countries.

Indonesia will take part at the summit as a guest to meet the invitation from Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

“A number of issues in ASEAN will be conveyed at the G7, such as perhaps related to Myanmar,” Jokowi said in a press statement at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, East Jakarta, Friday, May 19, 2023, before leaving for Japan.

He also planned to present issues from southern countries. "The point is developing countries must be listened to, not only developed and big countries. That’s our wish,” he added.

Being held from May 19 to 21, the G7 summit will be attended by Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.

When closing the ASEAN Summit on May 11, Jokowi highlighted the commitment of the Southeast Asian bloc to keep the efforts to end violence in Myanmar. One of them is by engaging with the ruling junta and all stakeholders for the sake of humanity.

“It’s important for me to underline that engagement does not mean recognition. Taking an approach does not mean giving recognition,” Jokowi said in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, Thursday, May 11, 2023.
