KPK Proposes Moving Corruption Inmates to Terrorist Prison Island

10 May 2023 05:53 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chairperson Nurul Ghufron on Tuesday lamented the lack of deterrent effect on corruption inmates in the current prison facility and suggested that the agency is considering other alternatives such as the Nusakambangan penitentiary, which among others is also notoriously known to imprison terrorist convicts.

However, he insisted that the plan to move corruption suspects to the island prison located in Central Java remains to be a discourse.

“This remains a discourse. Initially, our hopes are to have Nusakambangan imprison corruption suspects will be intimidating enough to create a deterrent effect,” said Nurul at the KPK headquarters on Tuesday.

The agency’s Instagram account uploaded the possible plan through a list of recommendations that could help improve penitentiary management with the end goal of creating a more impactful deterrent effect.

Apart from moving the facility, KPK also suggested a revision of Government Regulation No.99/2012 on incarceration remission grants on cases involving illegal drugs; creating a diversion mechanism for minor violations and drug users by optimizing the penitentiary agency; and lastly, moving corruption inmates to the Nusakambangan facility.
