Mahfud Md Asks Regional Govt to Allow Use of Public Facility for Eid Prayers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md called on all parties to always build harmony in the midst of potential disparities for Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri.
He asserted the call for the local government to accommodate the use of public facilities for the implementation of Eid prayers this week.
“The government asks public facilities, such as fields, managed by the regional government to be opened and allowed for Eid al-Fitr prayers if there are mass organizations or community groups willing to use them. The regional government is asked to accommodate them. We must build harmony even though we have different days of the holiday,” Mahfud tweeted on his personal account @mohmahfudmd, on Tuesday, April 18.
He emphasized that even though there were differences, the determination of Eid day is carried out based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
“NU (Nahdlatul Ulama) and Muhammadiyah both celebrate Eid on the 1st of Shawwal. The only difference is in the degree of the height of the new moon,” Mahfud tweeted again.
He made the tweets amid controversy that several local governments refused to issue permits for the use of the field for the Eid Al-Fitr 1444 H prayers, which were planned to be held on Friday, April 21, such as Sukabumi, West Java.
On Monday evening, April 17, Muhammadiyah Secretary Abdul Mu'ti said Pekalongan Mayor Afzan Arslan Djunaid and Sukabumi Mayor Ahmad Fahmi had finally given permission to use Mataram Square and Merdeka Square in their respective areas for the implementation of the Eid al-Fitr prayer on Friday this week.
