TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo met with United States mining giant Freeport McMoRan CEO Richard Adkerson and state-owned mining firm Freeport Indonesia CEO Tony Wenas, on Wednesday, April 12. The two Freeport leaders arrived at the Jakarta State Palace to report on developments related to the company's mine production and refining facilities or smelters.
“Pak President hopes the smelter can be completed on time or at least sooner,” said Tony after today’s meeting, mentioning the new smelter in East Java.
Last year, Tony explained that Freeport Indonesia was completing the construction of a second copper smelter located at the Java Integrated Port & Industrial Estate (JIIPE) in Gresik Regency, East Java. The smelter project was targeted to be finished by the end of 2023 and operational in May 2024.
“When our new smelter operates, 100 percent of PTFI's copper concentrate products will be processed domestically. We hope that it can provide a meaningful multiplier effect for the nation and the country,” Tony said.
At the Palace today, Tony Wenas confirmed the progress of the smelter. “It’s planned to start operating in May and will run up to the end of 2024,” he concluded.
