TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bali Provincial Government and Governor Wayan Koster are in the spotlight ahead of the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games which will be held on the island on August 5-12.
The Israeli contingent was confirmed to be one of the participants in several tournaments such as 3x3 basketball and swimming. Wayan Koster's stance has been in the spotlight after rejecting the participation of the Israeli national team at the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Bali.
The rejection was allegedly the cause of FIFA removing Indonesia as the host of the upcoming youth football tournament. Koster, who is a PDIP politician, even sent an official letter regarding his objection to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
In contrast to the 2023 U-20 World Cup polemic, the Bali Governor has yet to give a statement on the presence of the Israeli contingent at the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games. A number of international media have also highlighted the potential polemic over Israel's participation in the international event, expressing worries that a similar fate would occur if Bali is consistent in its stance.
In response, the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari confirmed that Israeli athletes will attend the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games. To date, there has been no cancellation of the game's agenda.
“Once again, in the spirit of sportsmanship, we will play until the end. We will compete until the results come. There is no term for defeat before the match. There will be 206 countries participating [in the 2023 ANOC World Beach Games in Bali],” Raja said.
