TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Mount Merapi spewed hot clouds again on Thursday afternoon, March 30, when Yogyakarta was hit by strong winds causing a number of trees to fall.
“There has been a hot cloud fall on March 30, 2023, at 15:22 WIB with a sliding distance of 1,000 meters towards Kali Boyong,” said the Head of the Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) Agus Budi Santoso.
This event was the first since the series of hot clouds occurred on March 11-17, 2023. It was also accompanied by strong winds hitting Yogyakarta, especially the urban areas.
BPPTKG Yogyakarta noted that over the last two weeks, the volcano continued to emit lava avalanches. On March 18 alone, there were 38 incandescent lava avalanches.
The Yogyakarta Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) earlier announced that thunderstorms have the potential to occur in Mount Merapi and Kaliurang areas until Friday, March 31.
“The potential for thunderstorms in the Mount Merapi area will increase, especially from noon to evening,” said the Head of the Yogyakarta BMKG’s Meteorology Station Warjono, on Thursday.
