TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The commissioner of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), Theresia Sri Endras Iswarini, on Tuesday said domestic abuse cases committed by ex-partners that turned into violence against women had increased in 2022.
Based on the number of reports the commission received throughout last year, abuse against wives and in dating relationships ranked second and third.
"Ex-partner violence, violence against wives, and dating violence dominate the number of complaints Komnas Perempuan received," Iswarini said at the launch of the 2023 Komnas Perempuan Annual Notes on March 7.
There were 713 cases of ex-partner violence in 2022, followed by violence against wives with 622 cases, and violence among dating partners with 422 cases. Meanwhile, 140 cases of violence against women were recorded, 111 cases of domestic violence in other personal domains, and 90 cases of violence by ex-husbands.
Iswarini said victims aged between 16-24 years generally experienced violence from ex-partners and violence in dating. While victims aged 25-40 were generally classified in abuse against wives cases.
Mental abuse dominated the gender-based domestic abuse reports with a total of 1,494 cases (40 percent) from the total of 3,773 cases that Komnas Perempuan received in 2022. This was followed by sexual abuse reports (1,086 cases), and physical abuse (713 cases).
"Based on data from the National Commission on Violence Against Women and Service Agencies, partners and ex-partners are still the highest-ranking perpetrators in domestic abuse reports during 2022 with 912 and 702 cases respectively," she said.
