KPU to Run Elections as Scheduled despite Central Jakarta Court's Order for Delays

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Election Commission (KPU) chairman Hasyim Asy'ari stated said that the commission will continue to carry out the stages of the 2024 Election according to the schedule, as they have already been stipulated as a legal product in the form of the KPU Regulation (PKPU).

Previously, the Central Jakarta District Court ordered the KPU to postpone the 2024 election stages as part of its ruling in favor of the Prima Party's lawsuit against the KPU. The KPU was also asked to carry out the election stages from the start.

"This ruling does not refer to PKPU No.3/2022 on the Stages and Schedule for the 2024 Election. Thus, the stages and schedule still have binding legal force," Hasyim said in an online press conference on Thursday, March 2.

Hasyim said that the Prima Party, acting as the plaintiff, is a political party that was a candidate for election. The object of his lawsuit is the KPU's decision on which political parties can participate in the 2024 Election. Hasyim said that the KPU had already filed a motion to reject Prima Party's filed lawsuit against the State Administrative Court, and the court dismissed the lawsuit.

"That way, the KPU's decision regarding the determination of political parties is still valid and legitimate," he said.

He also said that the KPU had not yet received a copy of the Central Jakarta District Court's ruling on Prima Party's lawsuit.

Once the KPU received a copy of the decision, Hasyim said, the KPU will immediately file an appeal to the high court. "Let us emphasize that the KPU will continue to carry out the stages of organizing the 2024 elections," he said.
