TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, during his visit to the opening day of the automotive exhibition IIMS 2023 in Jakarta, was asked by journalists regarding the death penalty that was handed to former Internal Affairs chief Ferdy Sambo in the premeditated murder trial. The President said that the government cannot intervene in the judicial realm.
“However, I believe the verdict is based on facts and considers the pieces of evidence. I see that the witness testimonies were detrimental to the verdict,” said the President on February 16. “But once again, we cannot provide any comments.”
The President insisted that he cannot provide a detailed response to questions about whether the court had handed a fair verdict or not. “The verdict has been made. We must respect that,” said Jokowi.
Ferdy Sambo, former head of the National Police's Professional and Security Division or Propam, was sentenced to death by a panel of judges in Monday’s verdict hearing at the Jakarta District Court. The Court found him guilty of the premeditated murder of his aide, Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat.
"We sentence the defendant Ferdy Sambo with the death penalty," Chairman of the Panel of Judges Wahyu Iman Santoso read the verdict on Monday, February 13.
The public prosecutor demanded Sambo be sentenced to life imprisonment because he was believed to have violated Article 340 of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 55 (1) concerning premeditated murder.
In the case of obstructing the murder investigation, Sambo had also provenly violated Article 49 in conjunction with Article 33 of Law No. 19 of 2016 concerning Amendments to Law No. 11 of 2008 on Electronic Information and Transactions in conjunction with Article 55(1) of the Criminal Code.
