TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Transportation Agency planned to use Google data to read traffic movements on five city roads. The data will later be used to optimize traffic lights as a way to break down congestion in the capital.
“We collaborated with Google at the end of last year and they are presently conducting data analysis,” said the agency head Syafrin Liputo at the Jakarta City Hall, on Monday, February 13, 2023.
During the trial phase, the tech giant made traffic observations in one corridor, namely along Jalan Imam Bonjol, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Proklamasi, Jalan Pramuka, and Jalan Pemuda.
On that road, Syafrin mentioned, there are eight intersections regulated by traffic lights. “The results [of the analysis] will be used to optimize the traffic light along the corridor. If there needs an improvement, the area will be expanded,” he added.
Syafrin also said his side is developing a transportation intelligence system for traffic control. The goal is to coordinate 20 intersections in order to tackle traffic density in the near future.
“On the other hand, we surely keep integrating public transport services, including improving the quality of public transport services,” he remarked.
Last year, the Jakarta Provincial Government added 30 electric buses used by TransJakarta and eyed to have 220 electric buses by the end of this year.
These efforts to unravel congestion in the capital city added to the list of efforts that have been implemented so far, such as the odd-even policy, the plan to close 27 U-turns, and the plan for electronic pricing roads (ERP).
