Death Sentence for Ferdy Sambo 'Apt Punishment,' Says Govt Official

14 February 2023 10:32 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD on Monday argues that the severe sentencing the South Jakarta court handed to police murder case defendants Ferdy Sambo and Putri Candrawath is already appropriate.

Former police Internal Affairs chief Ferdy Sambo was handed the death penalty while his wife Putri was given 20 years incarceration for their involvement in the premeditated murder of Ferdy’s own police aide-de-camp, Brigadier Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat.

Mahfud argues that the court handed the death row as the court judges failed to see any aspects that can reduce the defendant’s sentence in the murder scheme.

“The punishment would be reduced from the maximum that could be given. But not this. Judges found that [zero aspects that could relieve Sambo] so it ended with the death penalty,” said Mahfud in East Jakarta on February 13.

He also assessed that Putri’s sentence was appropriate for her role as a murder case accessory in acting out Sambo’s plan.

“It’s understandable she received 20 years in prison for her involvement under Article 340 and Article 55 (1) as an accessory of premeditated murder,” he explained.

The Court Verdict and Consideration

The panel of judges at the South Jakarta District Court handed down a death sentence to Ferdy Sambo in a hearing Monday, February 13, after the judges considered that there was nothing mitigating the case for the former Head of the National Police's Internal Affairs.

“Sentencing Ferdy Sambo to the death penalty,” said the Chair Panel of Judges Wahyu Iman Santoso when reading out the verdict, Monday, February 13.

Wahyu mentioned a number of aspects that aggravated Ferdy Sambo's sentence. First, the panel of judges stated that the defendant's actions were committed against his own adjutant who had served Sambo for three years.

"The defendant's actions were inappropriate in his position as a law enforcement officer, in this case, Kadiv Propam (Internal Affairs Chief)," said Judge Wahyu.

Another aggravating aspect against the police murder defendant was that the court saw Ferdy Sambo had tarnished the National Police institution and that he did not initially come clean on numerous opportunities during the investigation.

This sentence is far more severe than the public prosecutor’s initial charges on January 17, where Ferdy Sambo was charged with life imprisonment for violating Article 340 of the Criminal Code regarding premeditated murder.

Apart from Ferdy Sambo and Putri Candrawathi, there are three other defendants who were tangled in the murder case of Brigadier Yosua. They are Kuat Ma'ruf, Ricky Rizal Wibowo and Bharada Richard Eliezer Pudihang Lumiu. They will face sentencing hearings on Tuesday and Wednesday, 14 and 15 February..
