TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two children aged 1 and 7 years old residing in Jakarta have reportedly suffered from acute kidney failure, with one undergoing intensive care while the other unfortunately passed away.
These two cases have pushed the government to temporarily halt the circulation of a syrup medicine produced by Praxion until further investigation can confirm the causes of the two incidents.
"We are working alongside numerous institutions in conducting epidemiology tracing to make sure the definitive cause of the acute kidney failure the patients suffered from is found," said Health Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Syahril.
The two recent cases are being dealt with by the Health Ministry together with the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM), epidemiologists, Jakarta lab management, pharmacologists, professors, and the National Police's central forensic laboratory (Puslabfor).
According to Syahril, the two victims consumed the Praxion medicine purchased from a local pharmacy.
The BPOM has temporarily issued an order to temporarily halt the production and distribution of this medicine until further analysis has been conducted. The agency assures that the pharmacy holding the rights to market Praxion had voluntarily recalled its product from the market.
