Ferdy Sambo Trial; Prosecutors Unmoved by Underground Movement

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD on Thursday assured the public that state legal officers handling the prosecution of Ferdy Sambo – former police Internal Affairs chief and defendant of a premeditated murder trial against his own aide – are not swayed by any underground movement in favor of the defendant. 

“I can assure you that the attorney remains independent and will not be influenced by those underground movements,” said Mahfud MD at his office on January 19, Antaranews reported. 

The minister is referencing the “guerilla movements” from parties that want the former police to be freed and others that want severe punishment for Sambo. He hinted at rumors that these movements involve high-ranking police officers.

In the same opportunity, Mahfud MD responded to disappointment shown by members of the public against the public attorney’s charges against one of Ferdy Sambo’s accomplices, Richard Eliezer, who has turned justice collaborator but was charged with a longer prison sentence compared to Sambo’s wife, Putri Chandrawati.

In the murder trial against Sambo’s aide, the public prosecutor has charged eight years imprisonment for the defendant’s accomplices Putri Chandrawati, Kuat Ma’ruf, and Ricky Rizal. Richard was charged with 12 years behind bars while Ferdy Sambo was charged with life behind bars.
