TEMPO.CO, Mataram - The National Park Office on Wednesday, Dec. 28, announced the temporary closure of Mount Rinjani climbing routes for tourists' safety. “[It will be] closed starting January 1, 2023, so that mountaineers can still enjoy the new year on the climbing trails,” said the Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Office, Dedy Asriady, to Tempo, on Wednesday morning, December 28, 2022.
Visitors who were going to check in for climbing on December 31, 2022, are required to immediately check out on January 3, 2023. This decision was issued to restore the ecosystem in the Mount Rinjani National Park area and safety concerning the weather forecast by the Class I of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency in Mataram, which informed of potential high rainfall and strong winds, followed by heavy rain and flood on Lombok Island.
The non-climbing routes of Mount Rinjani also closed
"All climbing routes in Mount Rinjani National Park, namely the trails of Senaru, Sembalun, Torean, Timbanuh, Aikberik, and Tetebatu, are closed. Starting January 1 to March 31, 2023," said the announcement letter from Mount Rinjani National Park Office.
In addition, said Dedy, the closure was also carried out for the non-climbing route in Mount Rinjani National Park under the announcement on October 7, 2022, starting from October 8, 2022, to March 31, 2023. The non-climbing routes that are closed include Jeruk Manis Waterfall, Mayung Polak Waterfall, and Mangku Sakti Waterfall. Apart from the climbing and non-climbing trek mentioned above, they are still open for other tourism activities.
Earlier this year, a similar announcement was made. From January 1 to March 31, 2022, all hiking trails were closed due to potential bad weather. At that time, the BMKG Mataram Class I Station estimated that extreme weather would occur which had the potential to cause strong winds, heavy rains, and flooding.
