Govt Increases DPR Seats to 580 under Perppu Pemilu

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government through the Government Regulation in lieu of the General Election Law or Perppu Pemilu increased the number of seats for the House of Representatives (DPR) from 575 to 580. The change was because of the four new provinces.
“As an implication of the formation of the Provinces of South Papua, Central Papua, Papua Mountains, and Southwest Papua, arranging electoral districts and allocating seats for members of the House of Representative, members of the Regional Legislative Council, and members of the Provincial Regional Legislative Council, as well as general election organizers are necessary to give legal certainty very soon without disrupting the implementation of the 2024 general election stages,” as quoted from the Perppu.
The increase in the number of seats is stated in the amendment to Article 186.
In the 2019 elections, there were only two provinces and two electoral districts, namely Papua and West Papua. Papua gets an allocation of 10 seats, while West Papua has 3 seats.
In the new Perppu passed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Monday, the electoral district in Indonesia's easternmost region is divided into 6. The formation of the new province also reduced the number of electoral districts of Papua from 29 to 9 districts/cities.
