TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The University of Indonesia Student Executive Body (BEM UI) announced that it will hold a demonstration protesting against the passing of the Criminal Code Bill (RKUHP) this noon on Tuesday. Prior to the Plenary session today, House legislators were faced with heavy criticism from activists and the general public that have rejected the Bill.
Andri Dwinanda, BEM UI head of the strategic studies department, on December 6 confirmed the organization’s presence in today’s protest. “Yes, BEM UI will be present.”
However, he was unable to confirm the number of protesters that will participate in the demonstration.
The National Criminal Code Reform Alliance previously voiced the rejection of the RKUHP. According to the alliance, the final draft of the RKUHP still contains provisions that are anti-democratic, perpetuate corruption, overly regulate private aspects of society, and impoverish society.
On Monday, the alliance held a symbolic action by sowing flowers and burning a book to represent the symbol of the RKUHP, which they deem a sign of the death of democracy in Indonesia.
As for today, the RKUHP has been passed into law at the plenary meeting of the DPR. This meeting was chaired by Deputy Speaker of the DPR, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad.
