Bali Police: Demonstration in G20 Not Prohibited But Asked to Be Postponed

10 November 2022 17:19 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Bali Regional Police stated that they will not prohibit the public from holding demonstrations during G20 Summit which will be held on November 15-16, 2022. However, the public is asked to reconsider their plans.

“We urge it to be postponed,” said Bali Police’s spokesperson Sr. Comr. Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto to Tempo on Thursday, November 10, 2022.

Although the public insists to stage a protest, Stefanus said the police will keep providing security. However, the demonstration will be centered on Renon Square, which is located about 24 km from one of the meeting venues for the G20 leaders at The Apurva Kempinski Bali.

As previously reported, a number of community activities scheduled ahead of the G20 Summit were canceled, including the “Forum of Bali Youth and Art for Climate" on November 6 as reported in Koran Tempo of November 9’s edition.

The event was canceled after the Kesiman Traditional Village, Denpasar, applied a regulation that banned any activities that have the potential to cause crowds on November 6-18 due to the G20 Summit.

Additionally, Greenpeace Indonesia withdrew its team of cyclists involved in Chasing the Shadow, a campaign on climate change, to Bali after experiencing repression from community groups in Probolinggo, East Java.

“We were surrounded by masses and were forced to sign a statement that Greenpeace will not stage a campaign until the G20 is over, let alone campaigning in Bali,” said Greenpeace Indonesia's head for climate and energy campaign, Tata Mustasya, on Thursday, November 9, 2022.
