TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A spokesperson for the Health Ministry, M. Syahril, reported no new cases of atypical progressive acute kidney injury among children recorded last Sunday, November 6, 2022.
Indonesia recorded a total of 324 cases as of November 6, 2022. Out of the total number, 102 patients have recovered, 195 died, and 27 were still being treated.
In the past week, Syahril said that the trend of new cases and deaths due to the disease has declined. "We are very grateful. On November 6, there were no reported cases," said Syahril at a press conference on Monday, November 7, 2022.
Syahril explained that the latest cases were recorded on October 29 and November 1 because the patients were still consuming syrup medicine from the pharmacy. New cases have decreased since the Health Ministry issued a Circular Letter that prohibits the use of liquid drugs for children.
Based on data from all hospitals in 28 provinces, the biggest risk factor behind acute kidney injury among children is the toxicity of Ethylene Glycol (EG), Diethylene Glycol (DEG) in liquid drugs.
The Health Ministry thus strived to suppress the case number. Provincial and regency/city health offices were also asked to carry out strict supervision of drug administration by pharmacies and health workers in their respective regions.
