Celebrity Lawyer Hotman Paris to Represent Teddy Minahasa

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Celebrity lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea has officially become the attorney for Inspector General Teddy Minahasa, who is implicated in a drug case. The lawyer and TV presenter only said yes to Teddy's request on Saturday last week, even though the disgraced police general had contacted him not long after the case was uncovered two weeks ago on October 14.
"He had actually asked me [to be his lawyer] since the beginning of the case. But I was busy in Bali celebrating my birthday. So I couldn’t give him an answer then," Hotman said on Sunday, October 23.
Hotman said that since the drug case was revealed he has not met with Teddy Minahasa. He also could not provide details about the drug trafficking case that ensnared the police general.
For Hotman, Teddy Minahasa is someone he has known for quite some time. He said that he has known Teddy since he was serving in the National Police's Protection and Security Division.
Teddy Minahasa's name has been attached to the drugs case after the Central Jakarta Metro Police arrested Kali Baru Sectoral Police chief Comr. Kasranto for selling shabu, the Indonesian street name for methamphetamine.
The crystal meth that Kasranto had originated from the evidence confiscated by the Bukttinggi Sectoral Police in May, weighing 41.4 kilogram in total. All of it, worth Rp62.1 billion, should have been destroyed.
Teddy allegedly instructed Adj. Sr. Comr. Dody Prawiranegara--the Bukittinggi Police chief at the time--to replace five kilograms of the shabu evidence with alum. Then five kilograms of methamphetamine was allegedly sold through a dealer named Linda Pujiastuti.
All the suspects in this case, including Teddy Minahasa, are charged with violating Law No.35/2009. They are facing the maximum death penalty or a minimum of 20 years in prison.
