TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cybersecurity and digital forensic expert from Vaksincom, Alfons Tanujaya, on Wednesday conveyed his doubt that the Personal Data Protection Act will suddenly eradicate data breaches. He argues that hackers can actually be punished severely even without the presence of this new law.
“Hackers are already aware that they are violating the law and if caught will face legal consequences,” said Alfons in a text message to Tempo on September 21.
The ratification of the data protection Bill was carried out by the House of Representatives (DPR) in a Plenary Meeting held on Tuesday, September 20.
Despite his skepticism, he hopes the law can reduce data leakage as data managers are faced with clear sanctions for a multitude of violations. Data managers are also expected to be more vigilant in managing their data. In addition, there will be a special agency to oversee the management of personal data.
If the institution can carry out its role properly, said Alfons, it will have a significant impact on improving Indonesia’s data management. "But if not, it will not have a significant data management improvement."
Alfons argued that the role in securing Indonesia’s cyber realm lies in one government body and is unchanged under the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN), which he hopes will improve its human resources and implement a standard for data security.
