TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi announced the fuel prices hike on Saturday, September 3, prompting the labor community to offer three solutions to reduce economic contraction in the public and that the policy will be right on target.
"First, [the government is suggested to] regulate the fuel use based on the vehicle manufacture year," said Labor Party chief, Said Iqbal, when contacted in Jakarta, Saturday, Sept. 3.
For example, he explained, the vehicles that can use the subsidized fuels are only cars from 2005 and below.
According to Iqbal, the majority of owners of cars from 2005 and below are middle to lower income groups, while owners of the newest cars considered affording to buy fuel.
The second is Iqbal hopes the government will transparently show fuel production costs to the public, so they can predict fuel price hikes based on their income.
He also hopes that the government may increase the wage of workers first, so the people would not object to the decision to increase the fuel prices. In addition, hopefully, the government would also provide other alternative energy as a substitute for fossil fuel at an affordable price.
