Public Trust for Police Institution Decreases, Says Pollster

25 August 2022 19:25 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Polling agency Indikator Politik Indonesia announced that following a recent survey in August 2022, public trust towards the National Police institution was rated at 54.2 percent. The pollster’s executive director Burhanuddin Muhtadi said that the dynamics are closely related to the public's perception of police performance and certain popular issues.

"Police last year topped the ranks but starting to show a dwindling trend. It is now left with 54 percent public trust," said Burhanuddin on Thursday, August 25, 2022.

The poll ranked three law enforcement agencies, namely the Attorney General's Office (AGO), the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and the National Police. The AGO occupies the first position with a confidence level of 63.4 percent, followed by the KPK at 58.8 percent, and the Police at 54.2 percent.

"Public opinion, public trust is similar to faith, sometimes it increases, sometimes it decreases. It depends on how the institution is performing," Burhanuddin said.

Burhanuddin added that if the survey was conducted at the end of July or early August, the trust in the police would be lower. However, the numbers may continue to change, especially during the survey period when the ethics trial against Inspector General Ferdy Sambo has not yet been conducted.

Burhanuddin said that despite the decreasing number, recent breakthroughs should be able to help the public to gain more trust in the Police. However, Burhanuddin explained that it would depend on the seriousness of the Police in solving the murder investigation that involves former Internal Affairs high-ranking officer Ferdy Sambo.
