Health Ministry Prepares Covid-19 Vaccination for Children under 6-year-old

23 August 2022 22:21 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin on Tuesday explained that his office is preparing to introduce a Covid-19 vaccination program for children aged 6 and below.

"The President asked for vaccinations for children under 6 years old, which we will start exploring. There is already an approved vaccine available, [it's] called pediatric vaccination," said the Minister of Health at the State Palace, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, August 23.

To date, the Covid-19 vaccination can only be given to children aged 6-11 years and 12-17 years old. As of April 2022, the coverage of the first dose of vaccination for children has reached 77.96 percent. Meanwhile, the achievement of the second dose of Covid-19 vaccination was lower at 62.56 percent and the third dose only reached 0.01 percent.

In addition to vaccinating children, Budi Gunadi said that the health Ministry will re-vaccinate people who are classified as vulnerable.

"At the end of the year, we plan to vaccinate especially those with low immunity. In November we plan to conduct another survey to see which areas have decreased immunity," said Budi.
