Mount Merapi Spews 129 Volcanic Debris Avalanches on Sunday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Merapi in Central Java emitted volcanic debris avalanches 129 times on Sunday, August 7, 2022, the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) reported.
The agency head Agus Budi Santoso said his side also recorded one volcanic quake during the day. “Mount Merapi experienced 152 multi-phase earthquakes and 35 gust earthquakes,” he said in a written statement, Monday, August 8, 2022.
Based on visual observations, the active volcano also spewed white smoke in thin to moderate intensity with a height of about 30 meters above the peak.
Additionally, six lava avalanches were recorded with a maximum sliding distance of 1,500 meters to the southwest during the observation period. “[The rumbling sound] of avalanches were heard twice,” Agus added.
To date, BPPTKG has maintained Mount Merapi’s status at Level III or on Alert. If the volcano emits an explosive eruption, the volcanic material can reach areas within a radius of three kilometers from the top of the mountain.
