TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Medan City Police's Traffic Unit issued an announcement prohibiting the use of electric scooters (e-scooters) or the like on roads, citing complaints from residents. The statement was posted to Instagram on Tuesday, July 12.

"We are conveying residents' complaints about the widespread use of scooters and otopeds and others on the highway around Merdeka Square," Medan Police' Traffic Unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sonny Siregar said in a video posted to the unit's Instagram account, @satlantasrestabesmedan.

Sonny said that the use of electric scooters on the highway is not regulated in Law no.22/2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation. But it is stipulated in the Transportation Ministry's Regulation no.45/2020 on certain types of vehicles.

It said: Vehicles, including electric scooters, electric bicycles, one-wheeled bicycles, hoverboards, and otopeds, are only allowed to operate in certain areas and/or special lanes. The regulation also stated that using those vehicles on main roads is very dangerous for users and the public.

Those who violate the rules, Sonny said, are subject to punishments in accordance with Article 282 for not obeying police orders or appeals.

Sonny said that he had met with the scooter community and association in Medan City on Monday, July 11, to disseminate the prohibition.
