Protesters Rally at Indian Consulate in Medan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A group of protesters who claimed to be in the movement to support the Prophet Muhammad, held a rally in front of the Consulate General of India located in Medan, North Sumatra on Friday, June 17, 2022. The group staged the protest against Nupur Sharma, an Indian politician from the Bharatiya Janapa party who had allegedly insulted the Islamic Prophet.
According to Tempo's observation at the location, hundreds of people gathered at the Al-Mahsun mosque after Friday prayers and convoyed to the Consulate General of India using multiple vehicles. As they arrived, police had already set up barbed wires and a line of policewomen guarding at the forefront.
The protestors' representative Rafdinal said that the rally is a response to the politician's statement.
"Nupur Sharma's statement had hurt the hearts of Muslims across the world," Rafdinal said.
One of the rally orators Haidan Nazwir said that the insult to the Prophet Muhammad by an Indian citizen is seen as a form of panic among Hindu parties amidst the growing number of Muslims in the country.
The demonstrators urged the government to summon the Indian Ambassador to Indonesia and completely cut off diplomatic relations with India and close the Indian Consulate in Medan.
