TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police criminal investigation unit (Bareskrim) and the East Java Police managed to foil a smuggling attempt of 8 containers filled with cooking oil ready to be exported to Timor Leste.
"Two people had been named suspects,” Bareskrim Chief Commissioner General Agus Andrianto said in his statement on Thursday, May 12
The containers were filled with a total of 168,642 liters which is equivalent to 121.985 tons of cooking oil from various brands, Antaranews reported. Police believe there are 11 containers in total with 3 already arriving at their intended destination but police are working with the customs office to attempt a recall on these containers.
The suspects are R (60) and E (44), who both acted as the exporters of the commodity that once skyrocketed in price and was also scarce in the market. The suspects created bogus export invoices and tried to deceive officials by labeling the exported items as house-building materials, computers, plastic ducks, and car spare parts.
Exporting cooking oil is currently illegal under Indonesian law as the Trade Ministry suspended exports of crude palm oil (CPO) and refined bleached and deodorized (RBD) palm oil, and used cooking oil. The temporary ban is aimed to meet the domestic needs of the commodity.
