Veteran Actress Mieke Wijaya Passes Away at 83

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's senior actress Mieke Widjadja bint De Ryder or better known as her stage name Mieke Wijaya, died on Tuesday night, May 3, 2022. She was 83 years old.

Mieke, born in Bandung on March 17, 1939, will be laid to rest at noon today, at TPU Tanah Kusir public cemetery.

Her daughter, actor and producer Nia Zulkarnaen, said her mother had spent one month in the Gatot Soebroto Hospital (RSPAD Gatot Soebroto) during Ramadan. Initially treated for diabetes, Mieke was later diagnosed with cancer.

Mieke Wijaya rose to prominence as a silver screen actress with her work in dozens of films throughout the 1950s to the 1990s, including the critically acclaimed 'Tiga Dara' by Usmar Ismail. Her first movie role was 'Gagal', released in 1954.

She gained household fame for her role as Bu Broto in the TVRI drama series, Losmen, which aired from 1986 to 1989. At the time, Mieke Wijaya was 46 years old.
