TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Yogyakarta city administration has prepared a regulation to ban electric scooters or e-scooters from being operated in Malioboro road as it has the potential to endanger riders or motorized vehicles and other road users.
The ban will be stipulated in a mayoral regulation. “The regulation is ready and waiting to be signed,” said Yogyakarta Deputy Mayor Heroe Poerwadi, Tuesday, March 22.
Heroe said the operation of e-scooters will be directed outside the Malioboro area. “There will be lanes from Tugu Yogya until the railroad intersection of Tugu Station,” he added.
The existence of e-scooters has drawn the public spotlight since the beginning of this year, especially after the rise of e-scooter rentals around the city’s famous road. However, its safety is also concerned since users often cross the main road with other motorized and non-motorized vehicles.
Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X also highlighted the existence of e-scooters. “The Yogyakarta Regional Regulation only regulates pedicab or becak and horse-drawn carriage or andong, so scooters are not allowed in Malioboro. But we want to first see what the mayor's decision will be,” said Sultan.
