TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukrainian Ambassador to Indonesia Vasyl Hamianin in a press conference held virtually on Wednesday, March 2, called for world governments, including Indonesia, to speak louder in condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Amid pleas for international support, the ambassador said moral support is one of the least the world’s community can do right now, including Indonesia.
“I strongly hope, I do sincerely hope, that finally Indonesia will stand up and speak out strong words of condemnation of Russian aggression and of Putin’s aggression,” said Ambassador Hamianin, “Condemnation of this is the least every country can do.”
The ambassador also noted that he expects the government of Indonesia to provide Ukraine with tangible support such as humanitarian aid, “This will be much appreciated, '' he added, “As you know we are receiving very strong support from the world’s community now from our neighboring nations.”
Previously reported on February 1, Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said an immediate de-escalation needs to be executed in the Russia-Ukrainian conflict. She also asserted Indonesia’s constitution that mandates the country to collectively preserve and safeguard world peace.
The Minister asserted that Indonesia’s foreign politics will remain consistent with international law and the United Nations Charter, including respecting regional integrity and sovereignty. “These principles must be respected by every country and are highly regarded by Indonesia,” she added.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry has reportedly taken diplomatic steps by reaching both the Ukrainian and Russian foreign ministers. "We hope that the talks between Ukraine and Russia can produce good results," said Retno.
