3 Types of Domestic Violence Other than Physical Assault

4 February 2022 17:40 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaDomestic violence or locally known as KDRT is a serious issue. It is not just physical assault that results in visible injuries to the victim, but there are also other categories of abusive behavior.

Article 1 of Law No. 23 of 2004 concerning the elimination of domestic violence (PKDRT) explains that domestic violence is any acts against anyone particularly women, bringing about physical, sexual, psychological misery or suffering, and/or negligence of household including a threat to commit an act, forcing, or seizure of freedom in a manner against the law within the scope of a household.

Referring to the National Commission on Violence against Women’s (Komnas Perempuan) website, domestic violence includes physical violence, psychological violence, sexual violence, and negligence of household.

Here are the types of domestic violence as outlined in the law:

1. Physical violence is an act that causes pain, illness, or serious injuries to the victim. This can be in the form of a punch, kick, or other actions that result in a physical injury to the victim.

2. Psychological violence is an act that inflicts fear, loss of self-confidence, loss of ability to act, feeling of helplessness, and/or severe psychological suffering on the victim.

3. Sexual violence is an act that forces sexual intercourse carried out against an individual living within the scope of the household and forces sexual intercourse against one of the individuals within the scope of the household for commercial purposes and/or a certain purpose.

4. Negligence in the household brings about economic dependence by limiting and/or prohibiting an individual to work properly inside or outside the house thereby the victim is placed under the control of the individual.
