Mount Rinjani Hiking Trails Off-Limits due to Potential Extreme Weather

The geopark landscape of Mount Rinjani/Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry

TEMPO.CO, Mataram - Mount Rinjani National Park Agency closed all hiking trails in consideration of potential extreme weather. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BKMG) Mataram Class I Station forecasted poor weather that has the potential to cause strong winds, heavy rain, and floods.

The hiking trails are closed from January 1 to March 31, 2022. “Visitors hiking [on the mountain] on December 31, 2021, must immediately return on January 2, 2022, at each climbing gate,” the agency announced on Monday, December 27.

The trails include Senaru and Torean hiking trails in North Lombok; Sembalun, Timbanuh, and Tetebatu hiking trails in East Lombok; and Aik Berik hiking trail in Central Lombok.

Other than banning climbing activities, the Mount Rinjani National Park Agency also closed natural tourist destinations in the area from November 29, 2021, to March 31, 2022.

The tourist sites are Jeruk Manis Waterfall in Sikur District of East Lombok, Mayung Polak Waterfall in Pringgasela District of East Lombok, and Mangku Sakti Waterfall via Sajang Village, Sembalun District of East Lombok and and via Sambik Elen Village, Bayan District, North Lombok.
