Another Earthquake Hits South Sulawesi's Selayar

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Another earthquake struck off Selayar Islands Regency of South Sulawesi on Friday morning, December 17. The epicenter, however, was different from that of the recent powerful 7.4-magnitude quake and the series of aftershock last Tuesday, December 14.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the latest quake was centered on the sea or 127 kilometers southeast of the regency and measured at a magnitude of 4.0. It occurred at 03:12 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The quake originating from a depth of 10 kilometers jolted Pasilambena District of Selayar at an intensity of III of the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI).

The national agency also recorded a 4.3-magnitude quake in Ampana, Tojo Una-Una Regency in Central Sulawesi at 07:40 WIB. The tremor was felt at scale III of the MMI. The epicenter was noted at the sea, 10 kilometers northwest of Ampana, and at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The BMKG’s quake and tsunami mitigation coordinator, Daryono, reported that 632 aftershocks in the Flores Sea after the strong earthquake last Tuesday. According to experts, the main quake which was centered at 112 kilometers southwest of Larantuka, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), was generated by the activity of unidentified faults.
