BMKG Issues Tsunami Warning after Strong Earthquake in Flores Sea

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tsunami warning was issued by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) following a powerful earthquake that struck off Larantuka, East Nusa Tenggara, Tuesday morning, December 14, at 10:20:23 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
The quake measuring 7.4 magnitudes on the Richter scale was centered at sea, 113 kilometers northwest of Larantuka.
The agency reported that the earthquake originated in the Flores Sea at a depth of 10 kilometers or was classified as shallow.
“The warning of the potential for a tsunami to be passed on to the community,” said BMKG through its official Twitter account. The early warning was intended for regions of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and Maluku.
