Papua National Games Ends With West Java Topping Overall Medal Count

15 October 2021 07:20 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian quadrennial sporting event, 20th National Games (PON XX Papua), will officially be closed on Friday , Oct. 15. West Java led the medal tally and end up being the PON champion.

The province that topped the medal scoreboard for the past week saw its athletes collected 133 gold, 105 silver, and 115 bronze medals.

Meanwhile, the capital city of Jakarta team fiercely competed with East Java until the final phases of the competition and managed to take the runner up position after claiming more silver and bronze medals, despite collecting the same number of gold medals.

In total, Jakarta bagged 110 gold, 91 silver, and 100 bronze medals, while East Java collected 110 gold, 89 silver, and 88 bronze medals.

Host province Papua successfully took the fourth position in the final standings after winning 93 gold, 66 silver, and 102 bronze medals. That includes a 2.-0 win against Aceh in the men’s football game.

Throughout the history of the Games, only four regions dominated the championship standings which consisted of Jakarta, West Java, East Java, and Central Java.

West Java’s triumph in the National Games marked the fifth time for the province in total after the province hosted the PON back in 2016. Jakarta still holds the record of most wins with a total of 11, but the capital city last topped the PON was in 2012 when hosted in Riau.
