TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The semiconductor chip shortage experienced by the global automotive industry has also affected car manufacturers in Indonesia, among them Toyota Indonesia, which reportedly had to reduce production capacity due to the scarcity of semiconductor chips.
“When the COVID-19 struck, the production once dropped. But we are now heading to recovery to increase capacity in line with the economic recovery,” Bob Azam, PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) corporate affairs director, told Tempo on October 8.
According to Bob, the chip shortage has affected the company’s vehicle production in Indonesia, but not to the extent of stopping it.
“There is no reduction in production capacity as we are currently increasing the capacity after it once dropped. But the increase in production needs preparations, which will take some time,” he added.
The global chip shortage previously affected Honda in Indonesia and forced it to limit the production of one of its best-selling city car Brio, which resulted in consumers waiting for two months for an available unit.
